Knockdown, orange peel, stomp, popcorn and dead-smooth. Matching the texture is what turns a drywall patch into a drywall repair nobody can find.

Drywall texture matching is the step that decides whether a drywall repair is invisible. A perfectly flat, perfectly sanded drywall patch left smooth on a knockdown wall is visible from the doorway, because the eye reads the change in surface long before it reads a change in colour. Matching is done by spraying a sample board, adjusting it, and comparing it against your actual drywall in your actual light — not by guessing from the tin.
With 54.5% of the city's housing built before 1980, a drywall contractor here meets the whole catalogue — often several textures in one house, because rooms were redecorated at different times and each drywall repair since has been matched to whatever was current.
| Drywall texture | What it looks like | Match difficulty |
|---|---|---|
| Smooth / level 5 | Flat, no pattern at all | Easy pattern, unforgiving surface |
| Orange peel | Fine even stipple, like citrus skin | Straightforward |
| Knockdown | Broad flattened mottled plateaus | Timing-sensitive |
| Stomp / crow's foot | Fanned brush marks in a repeating pattern | Hand skill, hard to fake |
| Popcorn / acoustic | Heavy sprayed granular ceiling texture | Hardest, especially if painted |
| Skip trowel | Sparse hand-troweled flat patches | Hand skill |
People assume smooth drywall is the simplest surface to blend a repair into, because there is no pattern to copy. The opposite is true. Drywall texture hides small imperfections; a smooth level-5 finish hides nothing at all, so a patch in smooth drywall has to be genuinely flat over a wide area rather than merely close. That means more coats, wider feathering and more sanding, and it is why smooth-wall drywall repair often quotes higher than a knockdown drywall repair of the same size.
It is worth being blunt about where the value sits in a textured drywall repair, because it is not where most people assume. Cutting and hanging the drywall is the fast part. Taping and coating it is ordinary drywall work that any competent finisher does the same way. The drywall texture is the only step that is specific to your wall, and it is the only step a buyer, a tenant or a valuer will ever notice.
A drywall repair that is structurally perfect and texturally wrong reads as damage. People do not see a flat patch and think "well finished"; they see a smooth rectangle on a knockdown wall and think something happened there. That is why the drywall texture stage is quoted separately, why it adds roughly $50 to $150 to a small job, and why it is the one line on a drywall repair estimate worth paying for rather than cutting.
The corollary is the honest version: if the drywall texture on a wall or ceiling is so worn, so heavily painted, or so unusual that a spot match will not hold up, the right answer is to re-texture the whole surface rather than to sell you a drywall repair that will annoy you every morning. On a single wall that is often a smaller number than people expect.
Around 47,987 Chattanooga homes were built before 1980, and sprayed ceiling texture from that era is the one case where the sensible advice is to slow down before any drywall work starts. If a large area of an old sprayed ceiling is going to be disturbed, have the material tested first by a firm that does that work. This site does not perform, arrange or interpret asbestos testing, and makes no claim about what any particular ceiling contains. It is simply the order of operations a careful owner follows, and it is cheap next to the alternative.
Drywall repair is dispatched across Hamilton County and over the state line into north Georgia: Chattanooga, Hixson, East Ridge, Red Bank, Soddy-Daisy, Signal Mountain, Lookout Mountain, Ooltewah, Collegedale, East Brainerd, Brainerd, Harrison, Middle Valley, Apison, Ridgeside and Lupton City, plus Fort Oglethorpe, Ringgold and Rossville in Georgia. Hamilton County holds 376,192 people and 168,013 housing units; the Chattanooga TN-GA metro area reaches 575,812. The drywall repair itself does not change when you cross the state line — the drive time does, so tell us where you are when you call.
Photograph the wall with light raking across it and send it over. Texture is the difference between a patch and a repair.
(423) 872-2412Almost always, and the way it is done is by testing rather than by eye. A sample board is sprayed with the candidate texture, adjusted for pattern size and knockdown timing, and held against your actual wall in your actual light before anything touches the drywall. Where a match genuinely is not achievable — usually a heavily painted popcorn ceiling — you get told that rather than finding out after.
Both start as compound sprayed through a hopper gun. Orange peel is left as it lands, giving a fine stippled surface like the skin of the fruit. Knockdown is sprayed heavier and then flattened with a wide blade after a short wait, leaving broader mottled plateaus. The wait between spraying and knocking down is what sets the pattern, and matching it is the skill in the drywall repair.
Usually just the patch and a blend zone around it. Texture is blended outward until the transition disappears, which on a wall commonly means going a foot or two past the drywall repair. Whole-wall re-texturing gets recommended when the existing texture is very coarse, very worn, or has been painted so many times that the pattern has softened.
Popcorn and stomp textures are everywhere in the housing built here between 1950 and 1979, and they are the hardest to match. On an unpainted popcorn ceiling a sprayed patch can blend very well. On a painted one it is much harder. If your home predates 1980 and the texture is going to be disturbed over a large area, have the material tested before it is scraped — testing is a separate specialism and this site does not carry out asbestos work or testing of any kind.
