The Short Answer
Water-damaged drywall is replaced, not dried, once the gypsum core has been wet. Drywall is gypsum pressed between two sheets of paper. Wet the core and it loses its structure permanently; wet the back paper and it delaminates from the board. Neither recovers when it dries. The drywall repair is to cut back to material that is dry and sound, let the cavity dry properly, then hang, tape, texture and prime new board.
Why Water Is the Biggest Drywall Repair Driver in This Valley

Stop the Water First. Every Time.
This is the one piece of advice on this page that saves real money. A drywall repair carried out while the leak is still running will fail, and you will pay for the same wall twice. Roof, flashing, valley, gutter, supply line, waste line, shower pan, window head — whatever it is, it gets fixed first. Then the cavity dries. Then drywall.
Drying is the part people underestimate here, because Chattanooga's relative humidity typically sits between 75% and 80%. A wall cavity in a closed-up house in August does not dry the way the same cavity would in a dry climate. Closing up wet framing behind new drywall is how a repaired wall becomes a worse problem a year later.
How Far Does the Damage Actually Go?
Water does not stay where you can see it. It runs down the inside face of the board, tracks sideways along the top of a baseboard, and wicks upward into drywall from a wet floor plate. The visible stain is routinely the smallest part of the affected area, which is why the damaged drywall gets checked with a moisture meter before a price is put on the repair rather than after.
- Ceilings. Water spreads along the top of the board and shows up in the lowest spot, which is often not under the leak at all.
- Walls below a leak. Check behind the baseboard. Drywall wicks moisture upward from a wet plate for several inches.
- Insulation. Wet batt insulation holds water against the back of the drywall for weeks. It comes out with the board.
- Bottom edges. Drywall standing in water after a plumbing failure fails from the floor up, even where the face still looks perfect.

Wet drywall gets removed and replaced. Mould assessment and remediation is a separate trade with its own protocols and it is not drywall work. Where there is visible growth across a meaningful area, the right sequence is a remediation firm first and the drywall repair afterwards. Saying so costs a bit of work and is the honest answer.

After a storm the queue matters. Roofers are booked, adjusters are slow, and the drywall repair is last in line by necessity. Photograph everything — the stain, the source, the wet insulation — before any of it is torn out, because your adjuster cannot assess what is already in a skip.
